About


Michael J. Alaia, M.D., is an Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and member of the Sports Medicine Division at the NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases in New York City. He is a fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine, tendon and ligament injuries as well as injuries of the knee, shoulder, and elbow.

Born and raised in Levittown, New York and graduating magna cum laude from Cornell University, Dr. Alaia received his medical degree from the New York University School of Medicine, where he was named to the Alpha Omega Alpha Society and received awards for academic and clinical excellence.
He then completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases, and had the additional honor of being named an Executive Chief Resident during his final year of training.
He then completed an additional year of fellowship training in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine at the James A. Nicholas Fellowship at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, treating active patients of all ages and studying innovative procedures dedicated to joint preservation, soft tissue repair and complex reconstruction.
During this time, he also had the privilege of treating elite athletes, working with the medical staff of the New York Jets and New York Islanders.

Dr. Alaia’s work has been published in a variety of orthopaedic journals, and has presented his research in many academic proceedings, with a current focus on injuries of the shoulder, elbow and knee. He treats adolescents and adults of all ages and is available for appointments. Dr. Alaia currently sees patients in Manhattan, Queens, and Manhasset, New York.

Dr. Alaia is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Arthroscopy Association of North America, and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. He specializes in all aspects of sports medicine care as well as arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery of the knee, shoulder, and elbow.
